The Cabanatuan Prison Raid

The Philippines 1945

On January 27 1945 the 6th Ranger Battalion and the 6th Army Special Reconnaissance Unit began one of the most dangerous missions of the World War II, a bid to rescue 500 British, American and Dutch prisoners of war held in a Japanese camp near Cabanatuan.
Despite operating in horrendous jungle conditions, miles behind enemy lines and in the face of overwhelming opposition the Americans, with the help of a Filipino guerrilla force, were able to save 513 prisoners and kill 225 Japanese soldiers in little over 15 minutes. Gordon L Rottman details the build-up and execution of this operation in a compelling tale of courage and extraordinary military success.
