The Great Locomotive Chase

The Andrew’s Raid 1862

In April 1862 the stage was set for the greatest locomotive chase in history, as Union forces stole a train and travelled towards Tennessee, disabling the railway line as they went, with the intention of cutting off supplies to the Confederate stronghold of Atlanta, Georgia. But, the raiders hadn’t banked on the dogged pursuit by the train's conductor, William Fuller.
The raiders were so hotly pursued that they had no time to inflict serious damage to the lines and could not stop to gather fuel. Finally, the train ran out of wood and the Union soldiers were forced to scatter and flee into the mountains. All were captured within days and sentenced to death.
